As part of Councils community engagement initiative Council is consulting with the community in relation to the following 7 new proposed by-laws. By-law 6 in particular may be of interest to residents as it proposes cat limitations and introducing mandatory cat registration. The proposed by-law encourages responsible cat ownership and allows the community to engage in the proactive management of our environment and the protection of native species.
By-Law 1 – To provide for a permit system, set penalties for breaches of by-laws, provide for certain matters pertaining to liability and evidence, set regulatory requirements, clarify the construction of Council’s by-laws and for related purposes.
By-Law 2 – For the management and regulation of the use of and access to all land vested in or under the control of the Council including the prohibition and regulation of particular activities on local government land.
By-Law 3 – For the management of public roads.
By-Law 4 – To set standards for moveable signs on roads, to provide conditions for and the placement of such signs, to protect public safety and to protect or enhance the amenity of the area of the Council.
By-Law 5 – For the management and control of dogs within the Council’s area.
By-Law 6 – For the management and control of cats within the Council’s area, including limiting the number of cats and introducing registration. Yorke Peninsula Council commonly experience challenges with feral cat populations threatening conservation and native species. By introducing limitations and mandatory registration of cats it is anticipated the feral cat population will become easier to manage and pose less of a threat to native fauna.
By-Law 7 – For the regulation of certain activities undertaken in the Port Vincent Marina to ensure the safety and convenience of persons in the Marina.
Information on the proposed by-laws is available here or in hard copy at the Maitland, Minlaton and Yorketown Council’s Offices.
