Barunga West, Copper Coast and Yorke Peninsula Councils are working together to prepare a new Disability Access and Inclusion Plan for the Yorke Peninsula region.
- The councils consulted with their communities from 2 September to 1 November 2024.
- The consultation wanted to understand where disability access and inclusion is good and where and how can it be improved.
- 60 people completed a survey.
- 73 people attended a workshop (in Port Broughton, Kadina or Maitland).

- Improve the accessibility of footpaths and provide safe crossing points
- Improve the accessibility of public toilets and provide more adult change facilities
- Improve awareness and attitudes towards people with disability
- Provide conveniently located accessible parking bays
- Improve access into shops
- Provide accessible playgrounds
- Improve disability access to beaches
- Provide information about disability services and the accessibility of local places, programs and events
- Improve the accessibility of events and facilities (including dementia and sensory accessibility)
- Prioritise and plan for disability access and inclusion and an ageing population (eg. dementia) in council projects and seek the input of people with lived experience of disability
Next Steps
- The councils will use this feedback to write the Disability Plan for the Yorke Peninsula region.
- The new plan will be written after the South Australian Government releases its new Disability Plan in about June 2025.
- The councils will seek community feedback on their draft plan when it is ready.
