Yorke Peninsula Council celebrated Australia Day on Sunday, January 26, with an event at the Maitland Town Hall.
The theme for this year, “Reflect, Respect, and Celebrate,” brought the community together to honour the diversity, achievements, and spirit of the Yorke Peninsula.
The celebration began with a Citizenship Ceremony, welcoming the district’s newest Australian citizens.
This was followed by the presentation of the prestigious Citizen of the Year Awards, recognising individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to the community.
This year’s award recipients were:
- Award for Active Citizenship: Lesley May
- Community Event of the Year: Port Vincent Gala Day
- Young Citizen of the Year: Angas McEvoy
- Citizen of the Year: Leanne and Richard Cane
Mayor Darren Braund expressed his pride in the event and its importance to the community.
“Australia Day is a time for us to come together, not only to celebrate our achievements but also to reflect on our shared history and respect the stories of all Australians,” Mayor Braund said.
“We’ve celebrated our newest citizens, honoured some truly outstanding individuals and events, and strengthened the bonds that make our community so special.”
Following the presentations, attendees enjoyed afternoon tea, providing an opportunity for people to connect, share stories, and celebrate the day in good company.
“Council extends its gratitude to everyone who attended and contributed to making the event a success,” Mr Braund said.
“Congratulations to all award recipients for their remarkable contributions to the Yorke Peninsula community.”
