Council’s Australia Day Celebrations will continue to be held on Australia Day following a vote by Elected Members on Wednesday night 8 November 2017.
Council is disappointed that the YPCT article heading as it appears in the paper and on social media has possibly misrepresented the Mayor’s intentions. The elected body had never discussed the concept of shifting the date of Australia Day. The Mayor’s intention was to try and increase attendance and nominations for Council’s formal awards by shifting them to the eve of the upcoming long weekend.
Mayor Ray Agnew attended the Australian of the Year Awards as a guest of the Governor on Monday last week, which included information and examples of what other communities do across Australia to encourage their communities to become involved, with the support of the Australia Day Council.
With attendances and nominations declining year after year (there were no nominations at all in 2014 causing the event to be cancelled), a suggestion was put forward to revamp the event and try an Australia Day eve function to focus on a family event. This would in turn allow Award Nominees and Recipients the chance to celebrate on the 26th with family at their respective township’s breakfasts and other local festivities.
Following significant debate about the proposal, Council unanimously rejected the suggestion and voted to hold the 2018 Australia Day celebrations on Australia Day 26 January 2018 at a location to be determined, with the Mayor and Councillors extending a warm welcome to all members of the community to attend.
Please consider nominating local Australian champions before the closing date Friday 17th November 2017, for the three awards on offer:
- Citizen of the Year
- Young Citizen of the Year
- Community/ or Community Event of the Year
Australia Day is a special day in the Annual Council Calendar as it is for many Australians, but requires all community members to support the events and put forward nominations, as without nominees, there can be no Australia Day Award celebration.
