The state government has approved changes to Black Point’s speed limit following consultation with the community.
The Department of Infrastructure and Transport has approved the introduction of a 40km/h speed limit, replacing the existing 50km/h limit on Black Point Drive, Outlook Road, and other roads within Black Point.
This decision follows Council’s commitment to listening to the community and acting on their preferences, ensuring safer and more pedestrian-friendly streets for residents and visitors.
The Black Point Progress Association formally requested that Council conduct a survey among ratepayers to determine preferences for either retaining the existing 50km/h speed limit or reducing it to 40km/h.
In late June 2024, Council initiated a community engagement process to survey Black Point ratepayers with 75% in favour of a reduction.
At its Ordinary Meeting on 11 September 2024, Elected Members endorsed the community’s preference and communicated the proposed changes to the Department.
Mayor Darren Braund commended the collaborative effort that led to this decision.
“The survey response rate highlights the engagement and investment of the Black Point community in shaping their local area,” Mr Braund said.
“This strong majority demonstrates a clear desire for a safer and more pedestrian-friendly environment.”
The Department has authorised Council to install, maintain, remove, operate, and display the necessary traffic control devices to implement the new 40km/h speed limit.
Council has ordered the required signage and will notify the Commissioner of Police about the updated speed limit.
Mayor Braund acknowledged the efforts of the Progress Association, ratepayers, and Council staff in achieving this milestone.
“This outcome is a testament to what can be achieved when Council and the community work together,” Mr Braund said.
“Thank you to everyone who participated in the survey and supported this important initiative.”
Installation of the new signage is anticipated early in the new year.
