Yorke Peninsula Council has welcomed a $10,000 grant to assist with the official opening of the Vietnam War Memorial Walk.
The funding, provided through Veterans SA’s ANZAC Day Commemoration Fund, will help deliver a major commemorative event on Monday, 18 August 2025 – a significant date marking 50 years since the final Australian troops left Vietnam.
The event will feature an official opening ceremony, a flyover by a Huey helicopter, and a concert by John Schumann and the Vagabond Crew, with Schumann best known for his time as frontman of the iconic Australian band Redgum.
Acting Mayor Richard Carruthers said Council was proud to support such a meaningful project for the region’s veteran community and grateful for the financial assistance to make the opening event possible.
“Council is extremely grateful to Veterans SA for their support through the ANZAC Day Commemoration Fund,” Mr Carruthers said.
“The Vietnam War Memorial Walk is an outstanding initiative that honours the service and sacrifice of Australians who served in Vietnam.
“With its spectacular location along Walk the Yorke between Coobowie and Edithburgh, and the unique, detailed recognition of every Australian unit involved, this Memorial Walk will be a national treasure and a source of pride for our local community.
“We especially thank local residents Roger Hogben and John Edwards for their vision and dedication in bringing this important project to life.”
The Vietnam War Memorial Walk will be the first and only of its kind in Australia, featuring comprehensive signage honouring all units involved in the conflict.
It has been made possible without cost to Yorke Peninsula Council ratepayers, supported by funding from the Australian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Program.
“The official opening event will be a fitting tribute to veterans, particularly with Vietnam Veterans Day holding deep significance for many across the country,” Mr Carruthers said.
“This will be an emotional and historic occasion, and we look forward to welcoming visitors from near and far to pay their respects and celebrate the service of our veterans.”
Mr Hogben said it was great to see so many people and organisations come together to support the important project.
“The amount of support we have received nationally, from veterans’ associations, the Australian War Memorial and many others, has been remarkable,” he said.
“We thank Veterans SA for their ongoing support and look forward to the official opening event on August 18.”
