Yorke Peninsula Council has passed “Go” on an exciting new initiative, endorsing funding to produce a custom Yorke Peninsula Monopoly board game.
The project will be designed to promote the region, support local businesses and drive tourism visitation.
Council has endorsed expenditure of $53,100 from its 2026/2027 Annual Budget to purchase 1,500 units of the game, with costs to be fully recovered through participating businesses and retailers.
The decision follows a successful Expression of Interest (EOI) process undertaken to gauge retailer support before moving ahead with the project.
Following an EOI, 35 retailers indicated they would collectively stock approximately 850 board games, demonstrating strong enthusiasm from the local business community.
Mayor Kylie Gray said the response showed the project was far from a Chance card.
“The level of interest we’ve received from local retailers tells us this is an opportunity well worth landing on,” Mayor Gray said.
“This isn’t just about creating a board game, it’s about showcasing Yorke Peninsula’s incredible towns, attractions, businesses and community spirit in a fun and engaging way.”
The Yorke Peninsula Monopoly game will feature local communities, landmarks, attractions and regional icons, creating a unique keepsake for visitors and residents alike.
Subject to the completion of the design, development and production process, the game is anticipated to hit shelves in March 2027, perfectly timed to coincide with the Easter holiday period.
Mayor Gray said the timing would help the region capitalise on increased visitation while providing a new promotional tool that continues working long after visitors have returned home.
“Our goal is to ensure Yorke Peninsula remains a property everyone wants to collect,” she said.
“Whether someone visits for our beaches, heritage towns, fishing, food or events, this game will help keep Yorke Peninsula front of mind and, hopefully, inspire future visits.
“It’s a wonderful way to celebrate what makes our region unique while creating another opportunity for local businesses to benefit from tourism spending.”
Mayor Gray said the initiative represented a smart investment in place promotion and economic development.
“In Monopoly, the goal is to build value,” she said.
“That’s exactly what we’re doing here by investing in a product that promotes our region, supports local retailers and creates conversations about Yorke Peninsula far beyond our boundaries.”
With strong retailer interest already secured, Council is now moving forward with the next stage of development to bring the Yorke Peninsula edition of one of the world’s most recognisable board games to life.
