With the opening of the season and the lovely rains, the ongoing weather pattern has posed problems for many. However on a positive note it has certainly given the planting and establishing of stage one of the Maitland Hospital front Garden a great head start. Four hundred dollars ($400) has been received from community donations along with many verbal encouraging words to the difference it has made to the look of the hospital.
The new Principal of the Maitland Area School, Grant Keleher joined the HAC after Andrew Gravestocks moved away, and this has ensured the ongoing collaboration between the Maitland Hospital and the Maitland Area School, with students assisting with the planting of the garden and possible involvement in its maintenance.
As part of the YP HAC meetings an open forum is held in Maitland, Minlaton and Yorketown on a yearly basis. In May at Maitland, following community requests, Jarrod Schmidke, the Yorke Peninsula Mental Health Team Leader, gave a very informative talk around mental health services. Excellent discussion was held and attendees received a Fridge magnet with relevant contacts and phone numbers. The HAC are always very keen to hear from community members about Topics or issues they would like to discuss at these forums. Maitland Hospital has now had the new renal unit upgrade completed, with four chairs for dialysis patients. Just waiting for the official opening!
One of the tasks of the YP Health Advisory Council is to consider the purchase of items identified by EO/DON’s as being needed to improve or maintain the quality of health care and comfort (from both the patient and facility aspect). With ongoing restraints within the health budget, HAC’s responsibility in relation to administrating donations from community members to meet the needs, and consider planning for the future is addressed very seriously. Currently the HAC are looking at the requested expenditure items for the 2016/17 financial year. Some of the items (involving the three sites) that have been paid for recently include:
- Replacement of lights in an emergency area;
- Specific equipment needed for care of Trauma patients;
- Bedside lockers that contain a lockable medication compartment;
- Sling lifter with weighing ability and Over way tables.
Donations made through YP HAC are tax deductable and can be earmarked for a specific site if wished.
Advanced notice that the AGM is held in November at Minlaton. Support to YP HAC representatives by community members attending would be greatly appreciated.
