It is with excitement and anticipation as the newly appointed Yorke Peninsula Arts & Culture Working Group announce the launch of their first major project GROUNDED YP Art Festival that is scheduled to begin on Friday 11 August 2023 (launch night) and conclude on Sunday 20 August 2023 (a 10-day event across many venues and towns).
We recognise that 2023 offers Guuranda, Yorke Peninsula the opportunity to utilise the growing popularity of experience-based tourism to attract visitors in August, a traditionally slower time for visitation. Our August based festival will be part of the renowned and celebrated state-wide South Australia Living Artists (SALA) Festival.
GROUNDED replaces the Easter YP Art Exhibition and will offer music, dance, performing arts, First Nations Narungga food, art and culture, artisan foods, beverages, products etc. We will continue with the traditional exhibitions with art prizes in fine art, sculpture and photography being held in Ardrossan, Yorketown and Edithburgh. We’re excited to create a comprehensive and immersive festival atmosphere.
Why GROUNDED and what is the purpose of curating an Arts Festival for the people and visitors of Yorke Peninsula? Well, YP’s ground is ancient, significant, and productive. Shack owners escape to the YP as it has a grounding and calming effect on one’s mood. The community sets its roots in YP’s ground and works hard to produce excellent things for our people. Our ground is fertile in practical and figurative ways. Art is often healing, inclusive and ground-breaking; it keeps us grounded.
Through the GROUNDED festival, we seek to inspire and grow the celebration of the arts on Guuranda, Yorke Peninsula by nurturing our creatives, traditional owners the Narungga People, residents, and shack owners. By offering numerous platforms for important storytelling and expression, we can connect with our visitors.
