What is YP Leisure Options?
The Yorke Peninsula Council is committed to delivering high quality, responsive and customer focused services throughout the district and coordinates the YP Leisure Options service. The program provides a range of social and recreational activities for eligible members predominately in the Council district. YP Leisure Options delivers centre-based activities to people who have age related health issues and for people with a disability. Working with My Aged Care participants and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) as a registered NDIS provider.
The program is delivered across the Yorke Peninsula and has the ability to provide transport to members including those more isolated in the southern YP with various transport routes in place. Using community and Council facilities in the townships of Minlaton, Yorketown and Edithburgh, YP Leisure Options currently has three permanent staff and a large number of dedicated volunteers working in a range of capacities.

What activities are available?
YP Leisure Options has a range of group activities on a weekly basis and includes:
- Propagation Options, propagating native trees, shrubs and ground covers from ‘seed to sale’ members are able to share their knowledge with the community through general sales and working with other organisations to revegetate areas around the Peninsula.
- Craft Options, working with skilled artists and crafters members learn hands-on techniques.
- Fun Options, science experiments, oval games and indoor games building social networks with peers and visiting community members.
- Cooking Options, creating mains and desserts from recipes, learning essential skills from table settings to using an industrial dishwasher.
- Hands-on Options, learn how to use a range of woodworking tools in a supportive environment.
- Transport Options, getting to and from around the peninsula and beyond.
- Fun Options, fishing trips, BBQ’s, discos and excursions around the Peninsula
- Options to build daily living skills, create goals and work with peers to increase personal capacity.
- Holiday Options to go exploring, 1, 2 and 3 day trips to travel around SA, including attending sporting events and concerts in Adelaide.
- Community Options, support to be involved with and build connections within your community.
What Groups are available?
Group activities are available Tuesdays through to Fridays and the availability and suitability of places will be discussed at a meeting with the YP Leisure Options Coordinator:
Arts and Crafts Group | The Arts and Crafts Groups meets at the Minlaton Town Hall alternative Tuesdays from 10:00am to 2:30pm. Learn about art techniques using a range of mediums and materials. With guest artists visiting and sharing ideas, there is always something new to create. This program supports members to create entries for the Minlaton Show exhibits held in the term 3 school holidays. |
The Wood Shed | The Wood Shed group program runs every Tuesday. With set projects each fortnight to create opportunities for members to learn skills and increase capacity to use a range of tools. Projects are sold within our community to raise funds for materials for personal projects that are completed on the opposite fortnight.The Wood Shed is open from 10:00am to 2:30pm each Tuesday. |
Holiday FUN Program | The Holdiay FUN Program runs 2 days a week, each week of the school holidays based at the Minlaton Town Hall. The program is designed to provide support to attend local events in the community as well to support members attending to get out and about visiting local towns across the Peninsula. Great for people visiting the Yorke Peninsula on holidays who are looking to connect with others and discover some of our local gems. |
Cooking Group | The Cooking Group meets at the Minlaton Town Hall alternative Tuesdays from 10:00am to 2:30pm. Members have the opportunity to try new recipes or refine old favourites, including cooking meals for lunch or dinner and baking tasty treats. Members get to enjoy their creations and take home recipes to share with family and friends. |
Living Skills Program | The Living Skills Program is established for supporting younger people with disabilities. With a referral from Disability SA, members are supported in an educational program that targets skills and knowledge specific to living independently and achieving outcomes. With a focus on individual needs, the Living Skills Program is designed to enable members to build on existing strengths in a range of learning areas; from money management, literacy and numeracy, as well domestic tasks, health and nutrition. Members are supported to achieve personal goals, experience success, participate in the community and support their own and others’ wellbeing. |
Fun and Games Group | The Fun and Games Group participate in a range of indoor and outdoor games to support our ‘Be Active’ approach to fitness and wellbeing. No gym equipment, just basic games on the Minlaton Oval and the occasional walk in the local area. Based at the Minlaton Town Hall, the Group meets alternative Thursdays and have regular excursions around the Peninsula. |
Tree Propagation Group | The Tree Propagation Group meets weekly on Fridays at the Yorketown Progress Association/ Lions Club Hall. Members participate in seed collecting excursions, propagation, and occasional tree planting excursions, in addition to the care of the nursery at the rear of the Hall. Open from 10:00am until 2:30pm, the Group is facilitated by Group Leaders with experience and passion for propagation of native tree, shrubs and ground covers. Sale of stock to the public is available from 11:00am, with a range of species to choose from. |
Who is eligible to participate?
YP Leisure Options welcomes enquiries from people who are interested in participating in activities with others in their local community. If you or your family member meets any of the criteria below, we can arrange an informal meeting to discuss more details:
- Resides in the Yorke Peninsula Council area or neighbouring district; and
• Have an NDIS plan with funding to build capacity and skills – must be 18 years or over; or
• Have age related health issues.
We are always happy to receive all enquiries, so please contact us to discuss further. We can assist you with referrals to the My Aged Care assessment team or visit their website at https://www.myagedcare.gov.au/for more information. Additionally, we can discuss how our program may fit in with your NDIS funding. You can also discuss with your NDIS local area coordinators (LAC) for the Yorke Peninsula Council area. Yorke Peninsula Leisure Options (YP LO) is eligible for the Temporary Transformation Payment (TTP) through the NDIS and all support items within the scope of TTP are charged at the current listed hourly or daily rate as set by the NDIS, which you can find by clicking on this link: NDIS Pricing Arrangement and Price Limits 2021-22 (PDF)
Volunteers
YP Leisure Options is able to deliver this broad range of activities due to the generosity of our dedicated team of volunteers who share their life skills to assist us to provide this much valued service across the Peninsula.
Volunteer tasks include; driving our vehicles to pick up and drop off members who have no alternative means of transport and who reside on ‘destination routes’. They are supported by staff and peers who assist members to get the most out of the activities. Volunteers can also work in an administrative and fundraising capacity, which supports our continuing service improvement and commitment to quality programs.
