- The waste in question at Marion Bay is not from any known historical Council activities
- The unsanctioned Marion Bay community dumping site has been used for decades by the public without the knowledge of Council senior management or Elected Members
- No historical agreement exists for this dumping, which started before the amalgamation of separate Councils into what is now Yorke Peninsula Council
- When Yorke Peninsula Council senior management became aware of the community dumping site, the CEO immediately authorised an investigation into the matter
- Further, Council staff were instructed to immediately cease any activities relating to the waste
- Any activities involving the waste prior to this were unsanctioned by Council senior management or Elected Members
- This includes the relocation of some waste to the Berry Bay – South site earlier this year, which is being thoroughly incorporated into the overall investigation
- The investigation is ongoing but a report has revealed that bonded, non-friable asbestos is contained among the waste at Marion Bay (no such material has been identified at Berry Bay – South, according to the report)
- Being non-friable (not airborne) this asbestos poses a very low hazard in its current condition; however, if disturbed in a manner causing fibres to become airborne it could present a health risk
- Council takes this matter extremely seriously
- Upon receiving the asbestos report Council immediately implemented measures to protect the public, and to begin the process of removing the waste and rehabilitating the land
- These measures include fencing off the site (coordinated for week of 25 September 2023), installing warning and educational signage, and dust suppression (coordinated for Thursday, 21 September 2023)
- Dust suppression is not typically required for non-friable asbestos but has been utilised out of an abundance of caution. More information about the dust suppression (SuppressX) can be found here: https://www.erizon.com.au/product/suppressx/
- Council intends to have all asbestos removed as soon as possible and is committed to completely rehabilitating the Marion Bay and Berry Bay – South sites
- The cost of this work is not yet known but fixing the problem and protecting our community is Council’s number one priority
