More about the desalination plant
Salt water is supplied to the Marion Bay plant via a 15 metre bore, approximately 10 metres above the high tide mark.
The Desalination Plant outlet is under the Marion Bay Jetty and the water disperses back into the sea without harm to the environment.
The use of desalinated water has improved the quality of water supply to the Marion Bay Caravan Park, businesses, residents and visitors to the area. It reduced maintenance costs associated with bore water (for locals) and removed the cost involved with trucking water from other townships with mains supply. It also allowed for rejuvenation of the water basin.
Solar panels were added to the site more recently, which reduced the power supply costs and made the plant more efficient.
The designers of the Marion Bay desalination plant brought a wealth of experience to the project, having installed more than 250 plants around Australia and the world, including highly sensitive areas such as:
- Heron Island
- Great Keppel Resort
- Bedarra Island
- Brampton Island
- Green Island
- Orpheus Island
- Lizard Island
- Various Torres Strait Islands
