YPC to Install Tesla Destination Charging
YPC was successful in obtaining eight Tesla Destination Chargers through a competitive application process. Tesla were offering 50 charging stations to South Australian businesses as part of their industry participation aligned to the Hornsdale Energy Park’s Tesla battery.
Electric vehicle usage across the world is growing year on year. According to the International Energy Agency, the number of electric vehicles on the road has skyrocketed to 2 million after being essentially non-existent five years ago. Yorke Peninsula Council CEO Andrew Cameron said “We are excited to be chosen to install as many as eight units. Electric cars are at the cutting edge of motoring technology. As the industry expands, Yorke Peninsula will now be ready for this change”.
Four of the eight charging stations will be provided for use free of charge for both residents and visitors. One will be installed at each Ardrossan, Minlaton, Port Vincent and Yorketown.
The remaining four will be used to compliment some of the new high-end cabins recently built in Council’s Holiday Parks. Two Destination Chargers will be attached to the new Luxepod cabins in the Point Turton Caravan Park, one situated with the luxurious 3 bedroom villa built in the Port Vincent Foreshore Caravan Park and one attached to the executive cabin in the Marion Bay Caravan Park.
“This is a deliberate strategy to have the charging stations partnered with our new high end accommodation. We want to attract a new niche market of visitors to the Peninsula” said Andrew Cameron. “Families with electric cars will be specifically searching for destinations that can provide car charging as part of their accommodation package”.
The Tesla Destination Chargers will be installed by local electrician Ashley Gaghan, Nu-Gen Power Solutions who is already an accredited Tesla installer.
YPC Caravan Parks Upgrades Enhance Tourism
Yorke Peninsula Council Caravan Parks have installed a variety of new accommodation options and infrastructure upgrades throughout three of their premier caravan parks. Building projects have included new self-contained villa accommodation, outdoor equipment and landscaping as well upgrades to powered sites at the Marion Bay, Point Turton and Port Vincent Foreshore Caravan Parks.
At Marion Bay Caravan Park four new two-bedroom villas have recently been completed with two of these being disability compliant. All villas have a deck with sea views and sleep a maximum of 6 people. Outdoor activities at the park include free mountain bike hire including a fun tandem bike, giant chess and a kangaroo jumper for the little people.
Point Turton Caravan Park has installed three LuxePods which are the first of their kind built within a Caravan Park. Two of the LuxePods are two bedroom with the third being a three bedroom/two bathroom spacious family accommodation. All are built on the upper level of the park with breathtaking views of Hardwicke Bay. Four new lawned powered sites have also been included on the upper level. Mountain bikes are available for free hire to tour the magnificent Point Turton surrounds or for use on the Walk the Yorke trail.
A luxurious 3 bedroom villa has been completed at the Port Vincent Foreshore Caravan Park. The villa is situated on the northern tip of Surveyor Point with a deck overlooking the spectacular 270 degree views of St Vincent Gulf and the Bay. It sleeps up to 8 people and contains a luxury ensuite with spa bath and a disabled compliant second bathroom. The eastern caravan sites have been newly landscaped with luxurious lawn. Activity additions include free mountain bike hire, giant chess, connect 4 and a kangaroo jumper. As a silver award winner at the 2016 SA Tourism Awards and a regular winner of the YP Tourism Awards Most Outstanding Tourist and Caravan Park, the Port Vincent Foreshore Caravan Park continues to be a major drawcard to our region.
Scenic Selfie frames were installed in all three towns last year and have been extremely popular with both locals and tourists, contributing to increased marketing of the peninsula.
The newly renovated YPC caravan parks will remain at the forefront of the tourism industry on Yorke Peninsula and continue to provide a major contribution to our tourism economy.
Andrew Cameron, YPC CEO, said that tourism is a critical economic driver for our region and the park upgrades enhance the visitor experience. Year on year, our summer occupancy demand continues to outstrip availability and by providing a variety of accommodation options we are meeting the needs of all niche markets.

Largest Recreational Marine Reef in Australia to be built on YP
Following previous community consultation, the Federal Government has announced the building of a 20 hectare marine reef located south of Ardrossan near Rogue’s Point.
All tiers of government, non-government, industry, private enterprise and community have all joined forces in this project. The project is being led by The Nature Conservancy in collaboration with PIRSA, the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, and other government agencies and community stakeholders. The Federal Coalition Government will also contribute $990,000 through its Stronger Regions Fund.
The Yorke Peninsula Council’s contribution to this momentous project is $100,000.
The reef will be made up of 120 rows at 80 metres long and 4 metres wide up to 1 metre high built of 11,000 cubic metres of limestone, thousands of tonnes of oyster shells and pre-seeded native oysters and various sized reef balls. It is estimated it will take 40 weeks to build stretching from Ardrossan to Rogue’s Point.
This will provide a major boost to fish and marine species stocks in St Vincent Gulf.
The Yorke Peninsula Council has been advocating for this project for a number of years. YP Council CEO Andrew Cameron said “this is the first large scale blue infrastructure project to be built in Australia. It will involve multiple funding partners working together across ecology and natural resource management”.
“Construction costs will be around $4 million with further in-kind support provided by funding partners. Lead partner, The Nature Conservancy will set up an office in Ardrossan.”
“The new reef will be able to be utilised for education and aquaculture programs, divers, fishers and community groups.”
“Tourism is crucial to our local economy and the flow through benefits to our region will be significant, creating jobs in the construction and operational phases as well as through increased international and national tourists. The reef will also be extremely attractive to local and state recreational fishermen with excellent access from several boat ramps.”
Defibrillators for YP Council Worksites
Yorke Peninsula Council is pleased to advise that it has recently purchased four Defibrillators for community access.
Approximately 30,000 Australians suffer Sudden Cardiac Arrest each year. Cardiac arrest can strike without warning to anyone, anywhere and at any time. The first five minutes holds the key to a patient’s optimum survival.
YPC CEO Andrew Cameron explained “Yorke Peninsula Council recognises that early resuscitation provides the best chance for recovery from sudden cardiac arrest.”
The community can access these units during business hours at:
Maitland Council office 8 Elizabeth Street
Minlaton Visitor Information Centre 29 Main Street
Yorketown Council office 15 Edithburgh Road
Warooka Depot Player Street
SA Ambulance Service volunteer Mark Austin demonstrated the use of hands only CPR and correct use of the defibrillators to Council staff over several sessions last week.
The four defibrillators complement an additional two units that have been provided by YPC to Port Vincent Foreshore and Marion Bay caravan parks.
